About Timisoara

There are many parks and lush green retreats, as well, where one can relax and take a break from all the sightseeing.

In addition to its beauty and appealing attractions, Timisioara also stands out for being historical. First mentioned as a place in either 1212 or 1266, throughout its existence, Timisoars has "seen" many happenings, and has experienced plenty.

After being under Ottoman rule for nearly 160 years, the city evolved from a strategic fortress to an economic and industrial center - numerous factories were built, electric illumination and public transport were introduced, and railroad connections were established.

Timisoara was the first mainland European city to be lit by electric street lamps, in 1884, and was also the second European and the first city in what is now Romania, with horse drawn trams, in 1867.

After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, things were "shaken up" in all of Romania, therefore, like all the other cities, Timisoara overcame the moment and blossomed, today, its beauty and history drawing numerous visitors.

Timisoara is a place where past and present are bound together, a place of history, art galleries and museums, theatres, concert halls, traditional restaurants, and last, but not least, a city with a thriving nightlife that attracts youngsters from all over the region.
